Full day trip by Jeep to the wild nature and to the places where marble is quarried, photo-stop on the mountain Tuttavista,
visit at the nuraghe Sos Carros and at the end a typical shepherds’ lunch at Supramonte di Oliena mountains.
The Gennargentu National Park extends from the eastern sea shore of Sardinia close to Orosei and southwards up to the mountains in the hinterland. One of the most interesting parts in the Sardinian hinterland is Supramonte di Oliena. For the nature lovers we propose very interesting trip by the Jeeps. The drivers (once local shepherds, nowadays touristic guide) will take you to the countryside leaving by Jeeps directly from the hotel on the shore.
Following the main road from Orosei you’ll reach the marble quarry. The best quality marble can be found right in the central part of the eastern coast. It is exported to Italy and to the whole world. Even the basement of the Statue of Liberty in New York is made of the Sardinian marble.
The first stop is done on the hill Tuttavista (its name can be translated like the panoramic point). After a short walk you reach a panoramic point with a high statue of Crist – on one side there is the Orosei Gulf, sea and rocks Capo Monte Santo and on the other side there is the hinterland of region called Baronia. Baronia is famous for its gardens and fruit groves. There are plenty of lemon and orange trees as well as olive and almond trees (almonds are used in the whole island for baking the almond cookies).
Then proceed to Su Gologone along the river across the Valle di Lanaitto valley. The next stop will be right there for a visit of the unique nuragic complex Sos Carros – one of the most interesting and well preserved archaeological sites in the area.
The following stop will be at the deepest spring in the whole area called Su Gologone. The water flows out from between 2 rocks and it is deep 135 m. For lunch you reach the forest area situated about 1000 m above sea level. At the fresh air and in the places where the shepherds keep their herds you taste typical local lunch. It is the same meal that the Sardinian shepherds used to prepare for long centuries: sausage and bacon, salted cottage cheese, hand-made bread (spianata or carasau) semi-seasoned and seasoned cheese and so on. After lunch and a short relax you drive back to the hotel across the beautiful nature landscape.
The area of Gennargentu natural reserve is very suitable location also for climbing, long distance trekking, trail running or Nordic walking since the last mentioned sport is becoming very popular among the tourists as well as the local people.
