The Kingdom of Tavolara

Tavolara, except of being one of the most marvelous places in Sardinia, is also the smallest kingdom in the world. What a surprise when I've heard our guide talking about the king of Tavolara. I would never say it was possible, since we visited the island and there is, indeed, only one beach and a restaurant and that's it. One part of the island is closed to the public, but in the part we visited, there was really nothing else. In the past in 1836 the king Carlo Alberto came to Tavolara for hunting. He found out that the family of Giuseppe Bertoleone had been living on the island. They were the only inhabitants. Paolo, the son of the only shepherd of Tavolara, met the king of Savoya, who proclamed the island the smallest kingdom in the world. Paolo gave the king a couple of mufflons as s gift. In facet, the king of Savoya came to Tavolara for hunting as there were some legends talking about the misterious animals living on the island. The existance of the kingdom was comunicated also to the register at the prefecture at Sassari. Later on, when the queen Victory sailed around Sardinia, she stopped at Tavolara and invited the descendents of the king on board of her ship. They took a picture together that is even nowadays in the Buckingham palace. The descendents of the king of Tavolara Giuseppe Bertoleoni still live in Porto San Paolo. It's the only port the ferries for Tavolara leave from. On the island they organize also the summer film festival. This trip was the only one where we had a local guide during our holidays, but it was really nice and better than going on your own.
